We’ve had some beautiful weather in Devon the last few weeks, prompting people to head to the beaches and countryside for walks, fun and outdoor adventure. Happily it looks like there’s more sun to come too, with forecasters predicting warm temperatures this Easter, and one of the hottest summers on record.  Holidays in Devon offer countryside and coastline, ancient ruins and modern shopping centres, and it's perfect for families or couples. So don't delay - book today!

If you’re after adrenaline-filled things to do then you can find out the best places for climbing, white water rafting, horse riding and a host of white-knuckle fun across the county.  Discover the great Devon outdoors with watersports, cycling, adventure sports, walking, climbing, fishing, riding ... and more. Why not try your hand at surfing or sea kayaking – we’ve got two coastlines and miles of beaches after all. We’ve also got two national parks, making a spot of climbing or hill walking on Exmoor or Dartmoor a must-do Devon experience. And if cycling's more your thing, our network of cycle trails means we’ve got that covered too.

But, if your idea of bliss centres around peace and quiet, tranquillity is something that Devon’s not short of. Hit one of the glorious beaches, ramble in miles of unspoilt countryside, visit ancient castles, browse art galleries, take a boat trip, visit some awe-inspiring gardens or simply while away the hours in a quiet café.

There really is something for everyone, and we know that by staying at Waves or Top Deck you'll really enjoy having your very own "home from home" and simply won't want to leave.

Let the train take the strain....

Thinking about a weekend break in Devon but can't face the long drive - well then why not let the train take the strain!  There are fast direct trains to Totnes from across the UK (only 20 minutes from our properties in Stoke Fleming) and if you book them ahead you can get your ticket for a great price too. (try www.thetrainline.com for some fantastic deals). You can pick up car-hire from the station or get a taxi.

If you're heading down to Devon from London, First Great Western offer the outstanding Pullman Fine Dining Service on the 18.03 and 19.03 services from London Paddington.  The journey is only 2 hours 45 minutes, an ideal amount of time to enjoy an delectable 3-course dinner.  As the UK's only on-train fine dining restaurant still in service it really is a very special experience. Award-winning (& Dartmouth's very own) restaurateur and chef Mitch Tonks has created a menu using wonderful local produce including the seafood of the South West which he strongly believes to be the finest in the world.  The wines have been chosen from the wine list of his award-winning Seahorse restaurant in Dartmouth and have been matched with the food.

Dartmouth gets festive on Friday 30th November & Saturday 1st December

Candlelit Dartmouth is now in its 6th year and is a wonderful celebration of all things Christmassy!  A traditional Christmas market fills Royal Avenue Gardens and spreads onto the surrounding ancient streets of this beautiful coastal town.  As evening draws in the town becomes a glorious winter wonderland as white candles illuminate the town’s pretty store fronts. 80% of Dartmouth's shops are  independently owned and will be staying open for late night shopping on both nights giving you plenty of opportunity to pick up interesting and unusual Christmas gifts. The restaurants and pubs will also be open offering Christmas food and drink.
Music is also a major part of the weekend, with carol singing by the Britannia Royal Naval College Choir on Friday night and on Saturday there is a free concert at the Royal Avenue Gardens bandstand to celebrate the arrival of the lantern procession and the closing of the event.

The celebrations start on Friday night with the turning on of the Christmas lights, followed by the arrival of Father Christmas by boat at the Boat Float in the centre of Dartmouth. On Saturday night is the famous lantern procession. Hundreds of local children (and adults) make their way through the streets carrying wonderful home-made lanterns.

There are so many activities throughout the two days, many of these taking place at the Flavel Centre, including lantern-making workshop, wreath-making workshop, and Children's Christmas recycle workshop.

Why not book a weekend at Coastal Retreats - a 3-night stay is only £175. Give us a call on 01803 835788 or email info@thecoastalhouse.co.uk to book today!

Highlights include:
  • Santa arriving by boat on Friday
  • Magical lantern procession on Saturday
  • Carol singing
